Appointments

Urgent appointments

To request an urgent appointment for today (Monday to Friday) during opening times:

When you get in touch, we’ll ask what you need help with.

We will use your answers to choose the most suitable doctor, nurse or healthcare professional to help you.

If appropriate, the GP will arrange an urgent appointment for the same day. These appointments cannot be booked online.

Routine appointments

To request a routine appointment in advance during opening times:

When you get in touch, we’ll ask what you need help with.

Why does the receptionist need to ask what is wrong with me?

Our reception staff are important members of the practice team, and it has been agreed that they should ask patients “why they need to be seen”. We have trained our reception staff to ask certain questions to help make sure that you receive the most appropriate medical care, from the most appropriate healthcare professional, at the most appropriate time.

Extended access appointments

Heartwood Medical Practice will be offering extended hours access for the residents of South Derbyshire.

If you are registered at our surgery, the following appointments are available to you:

  • 6:30pm-8pm, Monday to Friday
  • 9am-12pm, Saturday and Sunday
  • An hour and a half on all bank holidays (hours to be announced)

This is not the same as the out of hours 111 service which will remain in place.

To take advantage of these appointments, you need to pre-book contacting the surgery.

You must be the person attending the appointment when you book (you cannot ask someone to book on your behalf unless it is for a child or you are recorded as having permission to act on their behalf). Appointments are limited in number and are on a first come first served basis.

The appointments are based at Heartwood Medical Centre, accessed via the side door and are located on the first floor.

This new service is in addition to our appointment system and our service to you remains unchanged.

If you need help when we are closed

If you need medical help now, use NHS 111 online or call 111.

NHS 111 online is for people aged 5 and over. Call 111 if you need help for a child under 5.

Call 999 in a medical or mental health emergency. This is when someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk.

Home visits

Whilst we encourage our patients to come to the surgery, where we have the proper equipment and facilities available, we do appreciate this is not always possible. In this respect, if you do need a home visit, you can help us by calling reception before 10am.

You may only request a home visit if you are housebound or are too ill to visit the practice. Your GP will only visit you at home if they think that your medical condition requires it and will also decide how urgently a visit is needed. Please bear this in mind and be prepared to provide suitable details to enable the doctor to schedule house calls.

You can also be visited at home by a community nurse if you are referred by your GP. You should also be visited at home by a health visitor if you have recently had a baby or if you are newly registered with a GP and have a child under five years.
